Tip of the Week

WRITE ABOUT WHAT INTERESTS YOU

Everyone who writes for a living likes to think they are professional enough to do their best work on just about any subject, so long as the briefing is comprehensive enough.

Is that really true? I`m not sure. I think we do our best work when writing about subjects that interest us on a personal level.

I have written copy for all kinds of products and services in all manner of industries, and I think I do a pretty good job most of the time. But if I`m completely honest with myself, I would have to say that my best copy is written when I truly believe in the product or service, and actually have an interest in it.

But let`s take a step beyond that. When we recognize that writing for a particular client, product or service is touching us on a personal level, and increasing the pleasure we take from our work, it`s time to think about what clients to go for next. Or, indeed, what job to apply for.

Because even if you do write as well for a product that doesn`t interest you at all, I think most of us would agree that copywriting is more fun when you have a personal interest in the subject.

So why not plan you future work around what interests you most? I think you`ll become a better writer as a result, and you`ll almost certainly enjoy your work more.
